Northern Lights Sled Dog Rescue was founded in January, 2004, and got its 501(c)3
non-profit designation in June, 2006. The “Sled Dog” part of our name represents
the fact that we rescue both Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. We are proud
to be the Indiana affiliate of the Alaskan Malamute Assistance League, a 501(c)3
non-profit charitable organization which is national in its scope. Our mission is
to advocate for and/or rescue stray, abandoned, displaced or abused dogs; in particular,
northern breed dogs facing euthanasia in Midwest/Great Lakes region shelters. Our
goal is to place Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and northern breed mixes in
loving, experienced, and secure homes with people who understand and celebrate the
unique characteristics of their breeds. Northern Lights is notable for consistently
stretching its resources to take in special needs dogs; most particularly senior
dogs, dogs with special medical needs, and dogs who have suffered the misery of life
at the end of a chain. As 2010 winds down, we just passed a major milestone – 1100
dogs served!

Our operating model includes a significant number of dogs in life-saving paid boarding
(due to lack of foster space) and those dogs in particular are always happy to receive
high-quality, nutritious treats, durable toys, or visitors who have breed experience.
